When is it too late to book your Fall Photo Session?

Each year, I get families at the end of October or even in November frantically trying to book a fall photo session. (I know almost every photographer experiences that during the Fall season).

So this whole week what I’ve been doing with my blog posts is to remind you to schedule your Fall session TODAY! Don’t wait till November! PLEASE! Often October is the last call to do so! If not booking, start your researching TODAY!

I don’t have to be your photographer. I’m not writing this post (or any of the previous ones) to convince you to buy my services, although I wouldn’t mind that (wink, wink). I write it to let you know that to research a good photographer takes time. To find the one that matches your style, and budget takes effort.

Fall Photo Session - Anderson Lake September _ Ewa Samples Photography Morgan Hill-30

Waiting until the very last moment is not the best decision. What you might find are photographers who might not be the best fit for you and your family.

When you leave it until later, you might have to miss the opportunity to update your family portraits all together, or you will have to go with a photographer who has some spots available but is not who you would really want to work with (because the one you would want to work with is totally booked already).

Too late for Fall Photo Session?

Fall photo sessions are very popular because many people like to have current images of their family for Holiday Cards. However, I always say: why wait? Do it in May. Hell, do it in April when everything is blooming and use those images for your cards. Nobody’s going to care. Actually, your card will stand out with family portraits done on the beach or in blooming orchards…

Don’t want to frantically look for a new photographer each year? Well, grab this gift from me, and stay tuned for all my minis, specials, and other fun family session ideas I share with my subscribers.

Saratoga Smash Cake Session and Fall outdoor Family Portraits

This Smash Cake in one of my favorite locations in Saratoga was a crazy one. Normally a quiet place, this park turned into a corporate event on the day of our session.

saratoga smash cake session, ewa samples photography

I got to the location a little earlier. To my big surprise, what I saw is the entrance being blocked by a “corporate event” sign. Loud, live band music is playing. The park is swarmed with people. The scent of BBQ and grilled sausage is filling the air. And I’m panicking.

I called the client, explained what’s happening, and promised I’ll find a great solution to this before they get here.

I quickly started listing all the locations I knew in the area. And there is a few. However, the conclusion was simple. We didn’t have the time to make the drive to any of them before we would lose the gorgeous light. With a few minutes to spare, I went inside for a hunt for the best spot in the swarmed with people park. As I entered it, I realized, I know just the right place. I was not mistaken.

We were able to do the entire session without a single person bothering us on the back of the entire party. However, the smell of the bbq and grilled sausage was really hunting me the entire time. LOL

Saratoga Smash Cake Session

After the session, Kristen and her family gave me the best gift a photographer can get. A beautiful review:

AMAZING! Our family session was on Sunday night and it’s Tuesday and we already have our pictures! Ewa was great with our son and was able to improvise when the park where we were planning to have our session was closed! She knew there was a clearing, sort of in the woods, towards the back of the park and it was the perfect backdrop for our family session. The pictures are fantastic and I would recommend Ewa over and over!

If you’re ready to make some magic this Fall with me, grab this gift from me, and schedule your first session, TODAY! My weekend dates in September are booked however there is still time to create beautiful memories in October and November. Well, even December is cool, if you like to splash in puddles!

San Jose Kids Portrait Photographer inspired by Gregory Heisler

Last week I blogged about my first assignment for the portrait workshop I’m taking. Last week I’ve created some portraits that were inspired by David Bailey.

My second assignment was to study work of Gregory Heisler. This was pretty challenging. My idea for some of the portraits went beyond my equipment, and I had to settle for what I had on hand. I’ll definitely revisit this assignment whenever I have what I need for it. 🙂

This time I focused only on creating portraits 0f my kids, and let one of the pups out it.

I wanted to include a little more personality into those portraits. We used last year’s Halloween costumes, and for the extra spark we added their favorite thing to ride on. I also couldn’t let my older daughter NOT to put some of the decorations she loves to wear each and every single day. However we limited it, because I didn’t want the neck full or necklaces to take away the viewers focus. And believe me, she can look like a christmas tree on some days.

This was the last portrait I took of her and for the assignment in general, and I think, it’s one of the most accurate pictures of her. She loves her choo-choo train, and she’s very proud of all her riding skills. This thing is not made for heavy riding, but she doesn’t care. She’s taken it everywhere with her, and she’s been riding it to and from the park on daily basis. She has fallen off of it, just to get up and laugh her bruises away. She’s normally not the toughest cookie, but when it comes to this vehicle of hers, she has her own superpowers.

Today, I’m working on a third assignment, studying work of Mary Ellen Mark, and I feel like my brain is burning because all of the thinking I’m doing… 😉

The ONE thing to focus on this year {Day 7 of 15 Day Blog Challenge}

Well, it took me 3 days to write this post. Not because I was lazy, but because I was thinking about the topic, and it happened to be pretty tough one.

For day 7 of 15 Day Blog Challenge we should write about this ONE think we are deciding to focus on this year. We need to pick one thing among many ideas, plans and visions for our future and focus on that.

As I thought about it I had several things listed which I would want to focus on this year. In personal life as well as in the business. I would definitely want to get organized. Like really organized. I would want to focus on creating a nice work space.

I would want to get back to my regular gym schedule. I want to go there every morning until it gets close to leave the house and all off the sudden I’m too busy and have many things way more important to do (which is not true, lets face it!).

I would want to cook more and make more healthy meals for my kids. Because sometimes they get a bowl of pretzels or chocolate chip pancakes for dinner.

As I thought about it more and more I kept looking at my vision board I made at the beginning of this year.

My Vision Board

It feels like I have achieved probably 1/3 or a little more from the entire board. It helped me overcome fear of doing and doubtedness (is that even a word?) of dreaming big. Thanks to this board I found things I DON’T WANT to do (in business and in personal life).

But at some point I think, I took it too seriously. I’ve run myself to a point when I though I am dying. Yes, I really felt that. I visited several doctor offices and had several tests done on me. I was told I’m experiencing panic attacks. At another office I was sent to do tests for asthma.

Whatever that was, it’s gone now but I had experience two of the most scary weeks in my life.

And I realized that chasing for whatever I was chasing was not worth getting sick for. What was I chasing anyway?

Yes, my business is important to me. It is my third child, or wait, after the husband and two dogs it is my 6th child, actually. But as I don’t let my children run me, the same approach I want to take when it comes to the business.

And this is the ONE thing I will focus on this year.

[ctt title=”I will run my business I won’t let it run me!” tweet=”I will run my business I won’t let it run me! http://ctt.ec/w7b9C+” coverup=”w7b9C”]

I want to enjoy my family and be present in our life. I want to turn off the computer and stop worrying about stuff I have not yet done but should have. Because is it really that important? Should I really stress about not posting on Facebook for 2 days or not blogging my sessions on time.

I want to enjoy the life as it is not the way I want it to be. The same with my business. I’ll always want more, be better, act wiser. But  I’ll never get my yesterday back, so why waste it on unhealthy acting and thinking.

[ctt title=”I want to dream big but also enjoy the reality as it is.” tweet=”I want to dream big but also enjoy the reality as it is. http://ctt.ec/8e8w1+” coverup=”8e8w1″]

Like the whole situation of looking for a new place to live. It’s been frustrating and depressing on occasions but you know what… It is what it is and we will try to make the best out of it.

One more thing…
The husband’s asking why I’m writing those post for the challenge here. He’s curious who would want to read such stuff on a photographer’s blog. So if you read, let me know by commenting or liking. I’d like to show him that there are people interested in seeing a human face behind a business. Am I right? Well, I hope so.

My Most Important Action during the next 15 days {Day 2 of the 15 Day Blog Challenge}

For Day 2 of our 15 Day Blog Challenge we are to describe ONE most important action we will focus on during the next 15 days. Well, mine is quite clear. It is to deliver the awesomeness of breastfeeding portraits to all the mammas who participated in last Sunday mini-sessions. The event was organized by La Leche League USA and I partnered with LLL South Bay and donated 2 hours of mini-sessions to this project. I had 8 mammas in front of my camera that day and it was wonderful.

There will be also a short and sweet movie from the mini-sessions and I can’t wait to put it together. So, yes, not like yesterday, today is short, because I have to get back to editing.

Best place to visit and shop this weekend in Sonoma County

Few days ago me and my kids had an awesome time visiting a friend who lives up North. We had one day trip with the kids and I kind of fell in love in that place. The City of Petaluma – best place to visit and shop in Sonoma County, especially this upcoming weekend. Why? Because they will be having an amazing sales (their approach to Black Friday). So if you’re planning your family session this year, well, Petaluma is filled with unique boutiques with beautiful wardrobe, and if I had known I’ll be writing a blog post about it I would probably had taken a few photos of those boutiques. But I didn’t, so you just have to believe me 🙂

Take my word for it, you will find some beautiful outfits for the entire family!

This place has very historical feeling to it. Many of the old buildings have been re-purposed into retail, and it’s great to just walk around.

The sales have already (partially) started so I simply couldn’t resist and lost myself in a “yarn store”. Got out of there a few more cashmere yarn balls richer.

Along the shopping it is also a wonderful place to just walk around, have a lunch and relax.

Have fun!

Original birth announcement and how to rock a family session injured

If you are thinking about ways how to stand out from the crowd, well, this family has a great idea how to do it. They came up with a very original concept for their son’s birth announcement cards – and the idea is very simple. They waited one whole year to do them!!! I think that with the life getting so crazy and hectic after new baby arrival (especially if you already have 2 boys you need to take care of), this is such a stress free and genius plan.

Also, one of them came to the session with an injured arm. Can you spot that frown? It’s going to be hard to do that.  With a huge support and encouragement from the rest of the family he rocked the session like a superhero! Seriously!

Why breastfeeding mothers should be showcased not covered?

In the past 3 weeks I have taken a series of breastfeeding portraits for mothers from all over the Bay Area (click here to see the entire gallery), and I have fallen in love in this project. Mostly because of all the comments I have received from many of the moms after they saw their pictures.

From

“it was my dream to have breastfeeding photos taken with my son”

to

“I showed the picture to my mom and she said she couldn’t stop looking at it”

I could not believed how thrilled and happy were all the moms to be able to participate in such a session. I think, in my whole career I haven’t met a mom who was so excited for a regular family session as those mom were for their breastfeeding sessions.

In my opinion breastfeeding mothers should be showcased and not asked to cover because it’s a very healthy approach to our nature, to our bodies, and because it’s beautiful.

Now it’s your turn. Fill the blanks:

“In my opinion breastfeeding mothers should be showcased not asked to cover because ______________.”

Mark this day in your calendars, people. They also will be offering short breastfeeding mini-sessions in exchange for a small donation to LLL.

Mother’s Day Mini-Session {Family Photographer, San Jose, CA}

With this post I am starting a series of post from very recent Mother’s Day Campaign. With these mini-sessions we were raising money for CleanBirth.org and I’m very happy with the final outcome. We did an awesome work and I am very grateful for all the mammas who decided to join me!

Also, it is very likely that with this campaign we have started an annual money-raising event – “Save your memories and save lives“. This year we had two photographers participating. Next year we are hoping to have more!

So lets start with this wonderful session.

This mama is beautiful in and out, and she is a book author and entrepreneur. I’ve had a pleasure to photograph her and her family for a 3rd time.

Fun Family Photo Session with bubbles and other things {Family Photographer, San Jose, CA}

This was one of the most fun family photo sessions I have done so far.

Ester and her family were the winners for my full family session drawing.

After my first email, Ester wrote me back:

I quote my husband: you never win anything

I was very happy I could change it.

From the day I announced the winner they were nothing but amazing to work with. Starting from planning and coming up with ideas to simply the session itself. It was a win-win situation because not only they got a wonderful opportunity to capture their family but I got a chance to work on a very creative and laid-back session.

There were even moments where all of a sudden I have received kisses and hugs from the Lil One, and I think this was the most rewarding part of it all.

Thank you guys for this wonderful session!

 Check out those beautiful photos!
