Family Photography Sessions during Corona virus || San Jose Family Photographer

I’m stopping by to let you know that during this Summer I am still open for business. Many family photographers decide not to work and are taking their time off. That’s totally okay because this is a very personal decision to make.

However, instead of a variety of different packages and prices, with all that’s happening right now, I decided to offer 30 minutes long minis in the comfort of your own front porch or back yard. I want to make it as easy as possible for all my clients!

Don’t worry! YOUR FRONT or BACK YARD is AWESOME FOR FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY SESSIONS – I promise you!

I  have spent countless hours driving around the Bay Area and testing new locations. I still do that, because I have clients who’ve been with me for the last 7 years and I don’t want to run out of new locations to offer them each year!

All outdoor photographers have their “super secret” list of favorite locations they are ready to recommend for their clients. I have such a list as well. But when the world turns topsy-turvy the list is as useless as the list you make for the hospital before your labor. Do you know what list I’m talking about?

I was asked to make such a list for the doctors and nurses before my first daughter was born. They told me to write my entire plan for the delivery.

So I went ambitious:

  • all-natural,
  • no painkillers,
  • vaginal delivery,

But when the labor came, I was begging for epidural, and when my husband opened his mouth and this sentence got out of him: “but honey we had a different plan” I was about to shred him to pieces.

So, yeah… the list of beautiful locations can wait for another time… It’s still available for my clients if they want it…

I want to make it as easy as possible for my clients. Plus those mini sessions are designed to be as affordable as possible, too.

With the right attitude and the right angle, we can make anything work. Plus, these are special times. And special times call for special solutions 🙂

MAKE SURE TO TAKE YOUR HOLIDAY CARDS PICTURES THIS YEAR A LITTLE EARLIER…

As the world is absolutely unstable right now, and nothing is for sure, I really recommend taking care of your FALL pictures this SUMMER.

There are some predictions that the shelter in place (in its full potential) is going to return this Fall. That means no sessions, again 🙁 So, I really want everybody to start thinking about their family photos a little earlier this year. It might feel weird, but I think it’s also awesome to think outside of the box.

I’m open for sweet and short (not to mention fun) sessions:

  • on your front porch,

  • in your backyard,

  • in-home lifestyle, like baking cookies or doing crafts and arts or hanging out with your pet.

No matter the size of the pet. I’m pretty pet friendly.

As always I’m very open to hiking sessions or beach sessions. If you’re feeling adventurous or simply want to document your family having fun somewhere outside your home, that’s absolutely fine.  Let’s make it fun, short, and filled with as many kisses and hugs as possible.

AFFORDABLE PRICE and A GREAT GIFT

The sessions I’m offering have two prices:

  • $175 for 10 images if you want it super short and kept to a minimum!
  • $250 for all images from the session

All images are going to be delivered online via online gallery and you will be able to purchase additional images after you see them – in a situation where you book the 10 images package but after you see the gallery you will want them all. And I know that this is going to happen because so far all my recent clients have done that! Hahaha!

This would be also a wonderful gift for families that you know could use a cheer-up these days! Or just for your sister or brother or a bestie!

Use the contact page to schedule your session!!!
See you soon!

Family photos on the beach. From San Francisco to Watsonville.

Have you ever had a thought about having fun family photos on the beach? But then you thought: “nah”

  • beach is too busy,
  • beach is too sunny,
  • beach is too windy,
  • beach is too cold,
  • beach is too dirty,
  • beach is too sandy (well, I can’t overcome this argument!)

The list can go on and on. All those objectives are very valuable and true. However, let me tell you a secret:

missing out on magical memories

– if done properly beach sessions can be amazing! You can turn all the objectives listed above into something positive that  works for you. Not against you.

Wind is not always bad. It can make the images more artsy and romantic.

Beach is sunny and sandy.

Those things shouldn’t stop you from having the most fun session possible. Normally sessions on the beach are done around sunset. However, I’ve done sessions at 8am with the fog as a background.

and at 11am with the sun raising higher and higher with every passing minute.

With all that being said, beach can be foggy even at 11am. But I can work with that:

Beach can be cold.

That’s why you do the session while the weather is PERFECT for it. It means summer and early Fall.

However, you can always bring sweaters, blankets and be ready to cuddle!

However, if it comes to working with me, be prepare to have a little work out during the session. That will definitely keep you nice and warm.

If you’ve had beach session with the right photographer, you know what I’m talking about it.

If you haven’t had the chance to experience fun family photos on the beach with a pro photographer, I can assure you, YOU ARE MISSING OUT on a wonderful experience that can result in magical memories. Period.

I’m always excited when I get a family interested in a beach session.

Because I don’t really have a portfolio that would include only beach sessions, and I’m often asked about it, I decided to write this post and include images from some of my past family sessions done on the beaches from San Francisco to Watsonville. And each year I’m broadening the portfolio into more and more beaches and I’m always open to any suggestion of great locations. So if you have any, I’m all ears.

If you’re interested in family photos on the beach, look no further.

In case if you’d like to consider some of the places I’m familiar with, let me list you all the beaches I’ve had family sessions on:

  • Baker Beach,
  • Moss Beach,
  • Poplar Beach,
  • Natural Bridges,
  • Palm Beach (first session this upcoming Saturday. I’m soooo excited about it!!!)

What is the best season for family pictures

Today I’d like to talk about something very important when it comes to planning your session. I feel like often people think the best season for family pictures is Fall. In this post I’ll show you how particular locations change with seasons.

How to plan your photo session based on the knowledge about the seasonal changes in nature (photo locations) in our area.

In California, the Spring starts early. When most of the country experiences their first blooms, our blooming trees are already in the next phase. Most of the country has longer lasting green grass. We start to loose it around May. Our grass turns brown pretty early. When it comes to Fall, it also doesn’t last long.  The rain starts, and it’s hard to plan anything if you’re not willing to have fun in the rain, or your kids are too small for getting a little wet.

So, what is the best season for family pictures?

(This post is my personal opinion)

best season for family pictures_ewa samples photography_san jose

The same location. The same spot. A tad different angle.

1. Locations look the best in Spring. (in my humble opinion)

In my opinion it’s Spring, which means right now. We are actually getting close to the blooming season. So, if you’d like session in beautiful orchards you better contact your favorite photographer and ask him/her to squeeze you for a session within the next 3 weeks.

Often, people don’t want to do their sessions in Spring because they think it’s too early in the year, and they want to wait. However, later in the year, it’s hard to find lush green hills and fields. The only green places are public parks, surrounded by suburban homes, and play structures, and crowded with people. With all that it’s hard to get beautiful images with nothing distracting in the background, without a heavy photoshop work (which in my case, and the case of other photographers costs extra).

As a professional I do know locations that have blooms all year long, or green grass for that matter. There isn’t many of those and they are most likely filled with other families and their photographers, which is not always the most relaxing and pleasant experience.

2. The weather is gorgeous in Spring.

In Spring the sunset is around 7 pm (before the daylight savings time it’s 6 pm and earlier), so if you have small kids who have an early “nigh nigh” schedule, the current season is the way to go.

It’s getting warm enough for lighter clothes. Still, not overwhelming hot for kids and parents, or grandparents.

3. Your favorite photographer is not crazy busy in Spring.

You might not know, but most photographers (as well as other business owners), call the time after Christmas a dry season.

 People go on vacation.

People are recovering from all the Christmas expenses.

People think it’s too cold or there isn’t any good place to take photos in February (WRONG!)

Whatever the reason, choosing a session in February, March or April means you will have more dates to choose from (that’s my guess, of course, based on my own business).

The later in the year, the more busy photography business becomes. Fall is the worst! Often you will have to work around the photographer’s busy schedule not the other way around.

4. The late morning or mid-day sessions have prettier results (Spring vs Summer).

Knowing how hard it is to work around the schedule of my clients’ Little Ones, I am always available to do sessions in mid-day. Many photographers don’t do that because they do not work with mid-day light. (won’t go into the reasons, as each photographer has different).

Of course, the results of a late morning or mid-day sessions are different from sunset sessions (so called golden hour sessions). But because the sun is not so overwhelming and often the sky is covered with clouds in Spring, the mid-day sessions seems to be very pretty. (in my opinion!)

5. Occasional rain means you have to be ready to be spontaneous with the date of your session.

If you’re one of those people who have to have everything planned 2 months ahead, session in Spring might not be the best way to go. Since we’re still getting some rain now and then, scheduled dates are never certain. As much as doing sessions in the rain is adventurous and fun, I know that not everybody enjoys it as much as I do.

Here is a visual calendar for whole year of locations

January – Rain, and cold (mostly in home sessions)

That doesn’t mean they have to be gloomy and boring 😉

Now, most of the locations I’ve shown you in this post are secluded from public and crowds. I do like, and always highly recommend picking locations that don’t have anything that would distract kids (like the playground). If your goal is to have SUPER LIFESTYLE session with playtime documented, then the playground is definitely okey.

As one of my clients pointed out to me when I told her about the idea of this post, I was able to find a lush, green location for her in July. However, this was a public park, and during our session, we had people with their kids approaching us to play with our bubbles until we had to tell them to stop doing it.

best season for family session

So, this is why I try to avoid public parks as often as I can. With suburban homes and bathrooms and playground structures, it’s pretty hard to create a beautiful image without distracting things in the background.

This is why I spend countless hours on locations scouting. This is why I carefully pick my locations I recommend to my clients.

In my opinion best season for family pictures is Spring. As you might have noticed scrolling through the Spring locations provided in this post, the possibilities are amazing, colorful, and so vibrant. However, I know that each season has it’s own unique beauty.

The important thing is to be aware of what you want and what you like. It is also very important to communicate to your photographer the vision you have for your session. During all the years of my work I’ve found out that people who clearly state what they want, what is their vision for the session are more likely to be very happy with what I create for them.

If you like me, and see beauty in each season. I have the right solution for you:

Why you shouldn’t skip Maternity Portraits Session

Doing Maternity Portraits Session might not seem like the best idea when you don’t feel like doing anything else but munch on pickles and chocolate…

However… I’ve spoke and worked with so many mamas, sad and disappointed, because of this one decision. Especially new mamas. The changes that happen in a woman’s body during her pregnancy are not always the most pleasurable. Lets admit that. Every woman is different and each of us goes through and experience pregnancy differently.

maternity portraits

However… These changes, later in woman’s life will be the most precious discussion starters with the little ones. I’ve experienced that first handed.

I used to have few of my pregnancy pictures showcased on our walls. My kids would talk about them all the time. The dissuasions they were having were simply priceless.

It’s also so wonderful to be able to look back at those days. To look back through beautiful photographs of your growing family. Pregnancy is a big part in this process, and you really shouldn’t skip documenting it.

Find the right photographer. There is plenty of fish in the sea these days. You can find someone whose style you truly like and with whom you’d like to work on documenting those precious fleeting moments. Don’t pick your husband. PLEASE! Don’t say, you can do your own documenting because it’s really not the same.

Treat yourself to something special, because you deserve it. Within a few months your life will turn upside down, and you think you feel tired now… Wait… Just wait till the lil one gets here. You think, you don’t look (and feel) beautiful enough while being pregnant… Wait… Just wait till you barely have the time to get in the shower ONCE A WEEK.

Because of the different experiences in how we go through our pregnancies, I would highly recommend not to wait till the very end to create your maternity portraits. I know, that often women are advised to wait till their last 2 months to do the session because of the very big belly and dramatic look it helps to create.

However, if you see your belly growing enough for being noticeable pregnant, go for it right then…  If your pregnancy is especially difficult and uncomfortable do it as soon as you can, too. Especially if you’re on the edge of not being sure about the whole thing. In my case, the last two months of my both pregnancies I wanted nothing but pickles washed down with Sprite, fuzzy warm socks on my feet and a good tv show. I looked nothing like this gorgeous mama I worked with two months ago, but I was lucky enough to have a photographer friend who took some wonderful images of my pregnant self, and I cherish those pictures to these days.

Now off I go to finish working on this gorgeous family’s newborn video, and a new post from their newborn session. And it’s all just precious!!!

Golden Hour Maternity Session San Jose

Before we started this session, I was able to spent a wonderful time watching deer. Deer everywhere. And as the sun was setting down, lower and lower, I was getting happier and happier. Weird right? But I’ll explain.

That probably wasn’t the feeling my clients had. Considering they were driving from Redwood City in the very worst traffic hours. They were simply running late. The sun was getting pretty low, and we were on the phone once, and then twice.

Wouldn’t you be getting anxious if you were in their shoes? Now, as everybody in photography business know, golden hour is the time when the sun is super easy to work with. Also, with that light, you can create beautiful warm pictures everybody loves so much, without much effort 😉 The thing with me is, that I rarely care about it. Probably too little.

Normally, I schedule my sessions with enough time for being late… Ups… now that I said it out loud, I hope you guys won’t start coming later and later to my sessions… then we will be in trouble. 😉

So, don’t stress if you’re running late to a session with me. Probably you still have plenty of time. It’s a little different if you’re a participant in my mini-sessions; If you 15 minutes late, then you’re probably 20 minutes too late.

I’m normally done with my sessions before the sunset really starts, so even if I try to stretch the time to get the golden hour light, the kids, well, parents mostly, are ready to go home and put the kids to their well deserve nigh-nigh, while they can enjoy even more deserved glass of wine.

golden hour maternity session san jose ewa samples photography-21

This time, not only I was able to do the entire session during the golden hour, but I also had the time to shoot a short movie. That makes me super happy, as sometimes my sessions get so crazy busy and fast, that I don’t have the time to switch from pictures to movie mode…  During this session, I felt like the time stopped for us. I was loving it!!!

Enjoy the movie, guys, and the photographs.

How to win your free, professional, dream photo session?

win your dream photo session_ewasamplesphotography

I have planned to do it for a LONG, LONG time! Always wanted to find a special moment, or special inspiration, or special something to announce it, until I finally decided to do it. Because there is never more appropriate moment to do something then now. Putting things aside often ends with not doing them at all.

As photographers we always need to pick a niche in which we want to create the most of our pictures and get paid for them. Mine is Natural Light Family Photography. But I would be lying if I said I am not interested and wouldn’t want to try different kind of photography.

This post is to express my need for creating something more original and unique. To do that I need a person willing to work with me, someone understating and patient, and someone who more than anything wants to have a fun session!

I have recently talked with several of my clients (all moms) during our photo sessions and I was positively surprised that they were talking about wanting to do more creative photo shoots. I have learned that just like me, many moms have their own “dream photos” they would want to have done. They are definitely not family photos with kids, husbands, in nice, elegant clothes, smiling to the camera! Some of them are very dark and moody! When I learned about it…

…this is when the idea of running this contest was born.

To ENTER the contest:

– go to my Facebook page and leave comment with your idea of a “dream session” in the comment area under this post (you can describe it with words, or upload a picture, or a link to a website, Pinterest board, etc)

– it would be nice if you liked my page first but it’s not required (as I prefer real fans and followers over forced ones!)

THE WINNER will have chance to recreate with me his/her “dream session”.

– PERSON WITH THE MOST LIKES ON HER/HIS COMMENT WILL WIN THE CONTEST!

and just so you know I probably will not be able to do underwater photography, airplane jumping photography or nude photography. I also want to say that the word “RECRETE” is used here very freely, loosely. If you use a certain photograph or certain style of a photographer as an example of your dream session I will not try to copy that image/style in 100%. We will simply try to “be inspired” by the given photo or the style.

The contest will end on June 10th. The “dream session” will take a place in San Jose/Cupertino Area.

For a small encouragement, I will share as first:

– These are photos by Caroline White Photography (www.carolinewhitephotography.com), whom I adore! And if I could work with her it would be dream come true!

5 reasons why you should join Mother’s Day Mini Session with Ewa Samples Photography, Bay Area Family Photographer (Reason no.2)

Reason no. 2 why you should join Mother’s Day Mini Session:

Preserve your memories in the best quality there is.

But before reading any further simply “support” this cause first!!!

No matter if you’re considering going with me or with another Bay Area photographer. You should simply do it. Just do it. No matter how many cell phone photos of you and your family you have, going with a professional session is really the way to preserve your memories.

For the purpose of this post I had contacted some of the moms I had photographed in the past and asked them for a permission to scrutinize their cell phone photos. And you know what? They all said, GO FOR IT! So, lets get to it. 😉 (I didn’t really ask them for a permission to criticize their photos, I would never do it. I simply asked them to use their photos for education purpose)

This post is not about how bad anybody looks in cell phone photos or photos taken by not professional. I am not here to criticize or point mistakes, bad light or composition, or whatever you might think of. Cell phone photos are wonderful. They allow us preserve memories fast and on the run, memories otherwise would be lost if not cell phones. I even wrote a blog post about how to improve your phone photos. Great read for those who want to get better and more creative with their phone photography.

But agree with me or not, the cell phone photos are more likely to disappear somewhere is the chaos of your uncategorized computer files, and unexpected phone and hard drive crashes.

For example which of these photos, do you think, will end up on a wall or in a photo book? Mother’s Day Mini Session in San Jose

I know that most of people wait till the end of the year to get their family pictures done. This is an opportunity to have your mother and daughter, mother and son, mother and kids pictures done without the whole stress of running out of time before Christmas, or having to squeeze into your photographer’s busy schedule. If you want, bring your hubby along. If you don’t (or if he doesn’t want to), then don’t worry about it. This is the beauty of Mother’s Day Special – husbands are optional!

Being honest with you I think we shouldn’t need any reasons to want to help people. I know that sometimes we do not have the resources, or the time, or the energy, or we simply don’t know how to do it. I felt that way for a long time. I knew I wanted to help and to be involved with organizations that help other people. I finally found a way to do it and at the same time include more people in it, not only myself.

If you feel the same way I felt, this Mother’s Day Mini Session is the way to go. You don’t have to do anything else, just show up and look stunning! I will even be able to help you with a professional make up artist waiting for you at the location of the mini session.

Why do I want to do it, you might ask.

Well, I am a Family Photographer, wife, dog owner, coffee and green smoothie addict, but most of all I AM A MOTHER. If you’d like, head over to my post published at World Moms Blog “I could have been anything, but I am a mother first, to read more personal words about my feelings when it comes to being a mother.

I am also a lucky mother, because thanks to modern medicine, knowledge and technology, I was able to give birth to two wonderful, beautiful and very unique girls. If I didn’t have that I probably wouldn’t even be here today. There are people out in this world who don’t have the knowledge, proper training or access to modern medicine to support them or other women through pregnancy, during and after childbirth. There are women out there who are not as lucky as I was. Being a part of such a community as World Moms Blog, from where I know Kristyn (founder of CleanBirth.org), has shown me that as much as we differ from each other, we mothers are here with a mission: to provide our children with a better future, with happiness, with understanding of this world, no matter the religion, political views, culture or country we live in, we are here for our children and their protection. I was lucky to have my children. Some women are not as lucky. I want to help to change that! And this is why I decided to contribute to such a great cause as CleanBirth.

    Dad for two {Maternity Photographer, Palo Alto, CA}

For some reason, I think I have been one lucky photographer. While I constantly learn new things about how to pose my clients, how to engage kids more, how to make dads more involved in the session, more often than not I do not have to use this knowledge with my clients. Why? Because my clients are awesome! As soon as I take my camera out they do what they are best at – they are themselves.

This maternity session was amazing. While I was preparing my gear and thinking what I want to begin with, I wasn’t paying much attention to what was going on behind me. Then I turned to get the session started and what I saw was a family already striking an awesomely funny pose. They were more ready then I was because they took me by surprise. lol

    Peach Maternity Dress {Maternity Family Photography, San Jose, CA}

You know I must love the dress when it has earned a spot in a title. I was very excited when my client decided to have the session during the golden hour, and later, when she emailed me her dresses ideas I knew it’s going to be fabulous.

The final effect exceeded my expectations. When I saw her getting out of the car, I was in love! Honestly, I wanted to be pregnant again. She was glowing. She looked amazing.

I loved everything about this session. The place we picked, the outfits, the time of the day. I think, we couldn’t arrange it any better. And they all looked so happy and excited about the new addition to their family.

And while The Big Sister was busy being herself, and not really carrying about the whole photo session thing, I was able to capture this wonderful moment of a child being a child. This particular picture reminds me of the saying: “Dance like nobody’s watching”… and this is exactly what she was doing.
